Lexie Stark will not take the easy path.

Together with her parents and her sister, she takes two canoe trips each year on the Churchill River in northern Saskatchewan. It is not glamping. Since she was six years old, it has been two expeditions, five and 10 days in length, into the wild each summer.

The adventures, which originated in the childhood experiences of her mother, are a primary example of the independence, strength and empowerment Lexie’s parents have encouraged in her from the very start.

“My parents made sure we knew that they believed in us – no matter what path we decided to take,” says Lexie.

“They were always right there for my sister and me, supporting us, in our corner and cheering us on."

Included in that support, especially because Lexie’s father is a wealth advisor, was coaching on being money-conscious. As a child, Lexie had a three-category piggy bank. Each month from the age of 10, she split her allowance equally among spending, saving and charity, faithfully recording each inflow and outflow in a book that was reviewed monthly with her father.

As Lexie puts it, “As women, we are not always encouraged to be in control of our financial destinies or have a seat at the table. The reality is that some marriages break down and many of us will be widowed, so it is important for women to understand and be comfortable with the financial roles that have traditionally been the man’s.”

Working on marketing and events with Gillian, whom Lexie refers to as a “powerhouse,” is part of that effort and also a deliberate step to avoid any possibility of taking an easier route, which would be to join her father in his highly successful Assante practice in Saskatoon. So Lexie moved to Toronto in 2025, to challenge herself with new experiences and ensure her ultimate path is truly earned.

A graduate in Commerce from the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, Lexie identifies with Gillian’s list of the five things that make us happy: positive social relationships, meaning and purpose, physical and mental health, autonomy and agency, and achievement and growth. It is the first one that means the most to her.

“I am a people person,” she says. “And I surround myself with people I love and who love me. That is what especially gives me a lot of happiness.”
